How to Best Prepare Your Family for Hurricane Season

By Deborah Forget (4J)

Hurricane season is just around the corner… Yay… Unfortunately, this isn’t one of those times of the year like Christmas or Thanksgiving where “getting in the spirit” is a lot of fun, but nevertheless, it’s pivotal for all of us coastal inhabitants. Hurricane season here in the sunshine state lasts from June 1 to November 30, and no, that’s not six months of living in a perpetual state of doom and gloom, but it is something to take seriously.

In my six years here in Florida, I’ve experienced four hurricanes. Each year, I learn a little more about how to better be prepared for these swirling superstorms. There are countless factors to consider. For example, 2021 is my first hurricane season where I live on the ground floor. This adds a few things to my list that wasn’t there in prior years. Sandbags! And no, you can’t just run down to the beach and start shoveling sand into your shopping bags…  Another factor that I find myself wondering about, is why we have so many power surges where I now live, even on sunny days? Will my power be lost a lot sooner than expected? How can I be prepared to still have some light and more importantly in the hot summer… air conditioning???

Weather is unpredictable and I have found that mother nature is not to be trusted at times! With the winter storm that plowed (pun intended) through my home state of Texas, I’ve really started to think of all the different scenarios to be prepared for. No, we may not get very many blizzards here in the sunshine state, but I’m not a fan of waiting to the last second when it comes to being prepared for a statewide emergency.

In the next few weeks, we’re going to be diving into many factors to consider as well as your preparedness checklist to make sure we’re ready for whatever mother nature might throw our way!
